Ask an alumni!
What is a piece of advice you’d give current UCLA engineers?
“College is too short to only spend your whole time concerned about the next career milestone. Try out a new hobby and meet people from all walks of life!”
“You probably don't know what you want to do years down the line (and that's a good thing). Take advantage of cool and exciting opportunities that come to you, even if they arent 100% related to what you think you want to do. I've pivoted what I think I want to do so many times by the decisions I took but regret nothing! If an opportunity seems cool now but not "useful" or exactly what you want to do, it might open doors you didn't think were possible.”
“Be open to whatever learning opportunities arise and execute even seemingly menial tasks with effort and care. Your work becomes your brand, and accomplishing small feats is how you unlock the opportunity to accomplish big feats!”
“Get some sleep”

Professor of the Week
Dr. Mike Briggs
Position: 60th year EE student (Lecturer)
Involvement with IEEE: Senior Member, Faculty Advisor to WATT, Past Chair of the IEEE Coastal Los Angeles Section.
What classes do you teach? Which is your favorite? I teach ECE3 and ECE113DA/DW. I can't choose between my children.
Hobbies: Tennis, basic watchmaking, skiing, rooting for UCLA W Basketball, Cadillac and Corvette race cars, and the Detroit Tigers.
Favorite memory with IEEE: When I'm doing something with IEEE students, that moment is my favorite.
Your most useless talent or fun fact: I can purposely sing "Happy Birthday" off-key. Or maybe unintentionally.
Favorite Artist, Song, or Album: Miles Davis, Kind of Blue Album. If you like jazz and don't have Kind of Blue, your bucket's got a hole in it.
What are you most excited for right now: Seeing UCLA W Basketball win the NCAA. It would be a double after Ohio State winning the College Football National Championship.
Piece of advice to our readers: [1] Connect positive to positive and negative to negative (Mike Briggs, EE); [2] Be ready when she's ready (Mike Briggs, Husband); [3] If you like what you're doing and it doesn't put you in jail, keep doing it; [4] It's so much easier to be excellent when you are doing what you love to do.
