Member of the Week
Alexiy Samoylov
Year and major: 1st Year PhD, Electrical Engineering
Involvement with IEEE: Former aircopter student, lead, SPI member, and general nuisance that hangs out in the lab
Hobbies: Skiing, car stuff, 3d printing, swimming, dumpster diving, hiking, daydreaming
Favorite memory with IEEE: There's too many to pick from but probably meeting new people in the lab. That's how I met most of my friends. Typing it out for each person I met would take up too much space.
Your most useless talent or fun fact: My most useless talent is coming up with bad jokes on the fly.
What you would be doing if time and money were not an issue: Building up my own company which produces a variety of products to a very nice level of quality. I can't stand cheap products. Cheap products also are a major source of garbage and we can't afford to be producing this much garbage.
Piece of advice to our readers: As silly as "the worst they can say is no" is, it is kinda true. I got my PhD offer by knocking on a professor's door and politely asking him to let me join his lab. I also got free pizza over the summer by emailing the department (also politely) asking for free pizza, with the justification being that some students and I wanted to hold a social event because we were hungry. It got approved and we got free pizza. So yeah. I guess the saying is kinda relevant 🤷. At the very least, it is relevant in situations with low risk and high reward.
